Navigating Google Play's Guidelines on Deleting App Accounts

Hello viewers, welcome to this page. If you are new here, kindly follow me on all social media platforms, especially YouTube. Today's blog post is about Google Play Store's new policy, which talks about app-account deletion requirements and was released in April 2023. Now, let's discuss it.

The data deletion badge and data deletion area within Google Play's Data Safety section provide users with a new level of transparency and control over their user data, while also offering developers a means to showcase their responsible treatment of user data. If your app permits users to create an account from within the app, Google Play's user data policy mandates that it must also enable users to request the deletion of their account.

The account deletion requirement in the user data policy signifies that:

1. All developers must complete new data deletion questions in the Data safety form on the App content page (Policy > App content) in Play Console.

2. If your app enables account creation, you must:

- provide users with an in-app path to delete their app accounts and associated data (HOW TO - Add a page or button within your app where users can straightforwardly delete their account or provide a form for requesting account deletion, ensuring that their accounts will be deleted); and

- provide a web link resource where users can request app account deletion and associated data deletion. You have the opportunity to show users if you delete other data too (HOW TO - you will need to provide a link to a webpage or website. It does not have to be an app where they can login and request the deletion automatically; it can be a simple form where they can request the deletion and you can get back to them later, make sure their account will be deleted from your system).

NB: This new policy applies to developers who allow users to create an account in their app. If your app doesn't permit anyone to create an account within the app then you are free to go. However, make sure that your Data Safety form is updated with your current updates of your apps and in line with Google Play Store Policies to avoid any problems in future.

Deadline: It was December 7, 2023, but you can request an extension until May 31, 2024. Please note that extensions cannot be requested after December 7, 2023; you should submit your extension request before that date.

If You Don't Comply: After 31 May 2024, non-compliant apps may face additional enforcement actions in the future, such as the removal of your app from Google Play.
